This is an odd post as it combines an event announcement and actual content: I am very excited about an upcoming conference that will bring together people from very different areas and very different perspectives. But there is one shared goal: Resistance to capitalism, its technologies and its most exploitative manifestation: Big Tech! Cables of Resistance will take place in Berlin between 10 and 12 April. I have been involved in the organising team since autumn and have learnt a lot from the people who have done this kind of thing before and/or who are active in one of the various contributing movements like Berlin vs Amazon and the Tech Workers Coalition. Unfortunately, the tickets are already all gone although we already went for the biggest available space…but I am confident that something will only start and not end there!
The entire programme will be just AWESOME. Cecilia Rikap and Nina Scholz will kick us off on Friday and then there are plenty of talks and workshops over the course of Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, too many of them are parallel, but since the aim is to connect our struggles, two topics share a slot and then we get to explore topics we are less familiar with so far. Somehow I ended up as part of the programme myself. Malte and I will give a talk (in German, possibly with live translation) about the socialisation of platforms as a path of transformation into a better future. Our fellow activist Sandra will give a talk on Redscout24 about how to socialise Immoscout24 (the one platform really everyone despises), I will probably moderate the panel on fascism and tech and I am very excited about the assemblies where we will look to collectively discuss and work on the manifesto. The manifesto is the outcome of a joint process of the organising group and hence reflects their views as well. But we are also featuring it here because it contains very useful analysis and meaningful interventions that merit further discussion. Please read and share your thoughts. (Also in German, below).

Big Tech destroys our society and the planet.
Let’s resist together and combine our struggles!
We stand against AI and capitalism, for democratic governance and a good life for all.
Currently, digital technologies spearhead capitalist accumulation and destruction. In their current form, they represent a technological assault on our ecological, material and social foundations of life.
We have had enough of Big Tech! We are fighting back!
Big Tech corporations reinforce existing crises and injustices: They contribute significantly to environmental destruction and the climate crisis, they make labour and housing markets even more precarious, they isolate and alienate people that use their services, they exacerbate global inequalities, and they fuel fascism worldwide and facilitate systematic murder in wars and conflicts.
Big Tech leaves a long trail of destruction and exploitation in their wake: They waste energy and water, engage in neocolonial extractivism of rare earths and metals and dump their toxic electronic waste outside of imperial cores. To do so, they leverage deeply entrenched colonial infrastructural power. Big Tech supports the authoritarian isolation from and the hunting of those fleeing technologically amplified conflicts and environmental destitution. They drive automatisation that forces workers in the Majority World into ever more intense exploitation while devaluing and condensing labour in the Minority World.
Digital capital stands behind fascism and is its willing sidekick: Big Tech aims to become the indispensable force shaping the future and forcing upon humankind a dystopia disguised as a promise of prosperity. They disrupt weakened societal structures and wish for nothing more than an “artificial general intelligence”, which they worship as omniscient and omnipotent. They strive for the transhumanist overcoming of humans in favour of a supposedly superior species. This is directly related to the eugenics of the nazis: The sorting of people into valuable and unworthy is historically and technically inherent in their technologies. Big Tech demonstrates its desire for total technological control through the development of artificial birth-giving machines, revealing that they want to appropriate and even replace the female body. The fight against feminism and queerness serves the New Right as glue for their often contradictory positions.
We organise and resist!
We want to connect with each other and stand together against the destruction. Our struggles are already coming together in many places: in local resistance against destructive mines and data centres, in workplace organising, at demonstrations and strikes against the arms race and murderous technologies, particularly in Gaza, in urban protests against gentrification and surveillance, in antifascist actions against the New Right, in resistant science and through political hacking.
We organise and resist. We want to refuse, hack, shut down, break up, socialise and transform Big Tech.
We want to refuse, hack and shut down Big Tech: Let’s find the vulnerabilities, join forces and stop the expansion of Big Tech. We fundamentally reject “artificial intelligence” in particular and consider resistance urgent and necessary in order to render destructive software and hardware harmless and to push back against the technocratic-authoritarian restructuring of our societies.
We want to break up, socialise and transform Big Tech: Let’s expropriate and decentralise Big Tech as well as establish radically democratic control over digital infrastructures. We transform them into platforms and networks that redistribute from top to bottom instead of the other way around, facilitate global solidarity instead of making it impossible and protect ecosystems rather than destroy them. We must abolish some digital technologies if we are serious about a good life for all. They irreconcilably contradict what we want: radically democratic, socially and environmentally just societies.

Big-Tech-Unternehmen vertiefen bestehende Krisen und Ungerechtigkeiten: Sie tragen massiv zu Umweltzerstörung und Klimakrise bei, machen Arbeit und Wohnungsmärkte noch prekärer, vereinzeln und isolieren die Menschen, die ihre Dienste nutzen, sie verstärken globale Ungleichheit, befeuern Faschismus weltweit und erleichtern systematisches Morden in Kriegen und Konflikten.
Big Tech hinterlässt eine breite Spur der Verwüstung und Ausbeutung: Sie verschwenden Energie und Wasser, betreiben neokolonialen Raubbau seltener Erden und Metalle und entsorgen ihren giftigen Elektroschrott außerhalb der kapitalistischen Zentren. Dafür nutzen sie tief verankerte koloniale Infrastrukturmacht. Big Tech unterstützt die autoritäre Abschottung vor und Jagd auf Menschen, die vor technologisch verstärkten Konflikten und Umweltzerstörung fliehen. Sie treiben eine Automatisierung voran, die Arbeitende im Globalen Süden in immer intensivere Ausbeutung zwingt und zugleich Arbeit im Globalen Norden entwertet und verdichtet.
Das digitale Kapital steht hinter dem Faschismus und ist sein bereitwilliger Handlanger: Big Tech will sich zum unverzichtbaren Gestalter der Zukunft erheben und der Menschheit eine als Wohlstandsversprechen getarnte Dystopie aufzwingen. Sie brechen bereits geschwächte soziale Strukturen auf und wünschen nichts mehr als eine “allgemeine künstliche Intelligenz”, die sie als allwissend und allmächtig verehren. Sie streben die transhumanistische Überwindung des Menschen an hin zu einer vermeintlich überlegenen Spezies. Das ist direkt verwandt mit der Eugenik der Nazis: Das Sortieren von Menschen in wertvoll und unwürdig ist in ihren Technologien historisch und technisch verankert. Ihr Wunsch nach totaler technologischer Kontrolle zeigt sich in der Entwicklung künstlicher Gebärmaschinen, die offenbart, dass Big Tech sich den weiblichen Körper aneignen, ihn am liebsten sogar ersetzen will. Der Kampf gegen Feminismus und Queerness dient einer Neuen Rechten als Bindemittel für ihre oft widersprüchlichen Positionen.

Unsere Kämpfe verbinden sich bereits an vielen Orten: im lokalen Widerstand gegen zerstörerische Minen und Rechenzentren, in der Organisierung in Betrieben, bei Demos und Streiks gegen Aufrüstung und mörderische Technologien, insbesondere in Gaza, in stadtpolitischen Protesten gegen Gentrifizierung und Überwachung, in antifaschistischen Aktionen gegen die Neue Rechte, in widerständiger Wissenschaft und durch politisches Hacking.

Wir lehnen insbesondere “Künstliche Intelligenz” grundsätzlich ab und halten Gegenwehr für dringend nötig, um zerstörerische Soft- und Hardware unschädlich zu machen und den technokratisch-autoritären Umbau von Gesellschaften zurückzudrängen.
